SCWD's: Doubling the Efficiency of Your Pumps
Switching current water directors, or SCWD's, are an excellent way to double the efficiency of a pump. A SCWD will direct water flow from one input to two outputs, switching from one to the other to create a wave effect that can be more beneficial to a farm system than unidirectional flow. With enductors on the returns, a SCWD can produce a huge increase in water flow from your pump, and since the water flow is being directed to one output a time you'll only need half of the old flow rate. The new needed flow can even be as low as 1/4 if you're now using enductors and weren't before!
SCWD's come in two sizes: 3/4" and 1". The 3/4" size was the old standard, but unfortunately the units can't be taken apart for cleaning and jam easily, especially if there is floating algae or sand in the tank. The new slightly pricier 1" units have a lid that can be unscrewed for easy cleaning, and with the 1" outputs can handle much more flow. The best SCWD for your tank will vary with your tank's flow requirements, but with the added efficiency and better wave movements for the water they can be an excellent investment for increasing your tank's efficiency.
